Fresno Scifi-Fantasy Writers / Group Forming

FRESNO SCIFI-FANTASY WRITERS

I can't believe there's no group for this! (Is there?)

Let's start a monthly-ish group for face-to-face meetings to critique each other's writing. We'll hand out copies of our stories, and comment on them the next time we get together, and then hand out more copies, etc. We can talk about plots, props, character development (has anybody ever read Egri?), sentences & grammar & clarity, philosophy, conworlding, future tech (yikes), publishing (to web or not to web) ... WHATEVER WE LIKE, as long as it's about writing scifi & fantasy.

We can only learn to write better! And it'll be a great way to spend a few hours every month.

I've found TWO other interested parties so far. Let's make it a half-dozen or more!

Here's some samples of my work (free downloads, don't let the word 'store' scare you, this ain't a sales trick): http://store.mysteryandmagic.com/?toff ... try "Indiana" for scifi, or for fantasy try "Harb Zar" or "When The Moon Died."

Please reply to toff@arcticcoconut.com

I'm a refrigeration service technician, I do massage therapy, and real estate, and my hobbies include dog training, riding my harley, and skinny dipping.

I'm new to Fresno, in the process of moving into an apartment on the NW side of town.

I was hoping some of you cool people would give me some ideas of what I should do in my spare time. Where is the night life at? Are there any fetish clubs, biker bars, hippie hang outs, etc... Any good plays or shows?

Thanks for your help.

No Car Day..

Since winning the lottery I have a lot of time on my hands. I plan to put it to good use and help the planet. As a long time resident of Fresno I am gonna try to start a "NO CAR DAY IN FRESNO" which will probably take place on a spring day..probably a sunday and in 2008. I hope to do this to show Mad car Fresno that there is an alternative to the car culture. Walking, sidewalk cafes, cycling, naked minstrels. And best of all, slightly cleaner air. We all need to step back and not let the automobile rule our lives.

How many of you would be interested in supporting this.????

free skool fresno

Hi all I have recently started organizing a free skool in Fresno. I hope to have a web page up and running soon. here is some info about it. let me know what you all think. if any one would like to get involved let me know

Free Skool Fresno is a grass roots effort, volunteers from the community have come together to organize a network of learning groups where community members can exchange ideas experiences and skills without limitations in a open and positive environment. Classes are informal egalitarian, and are held in homes, social spaces, and parks. Classes range from artistic projects, workshops, reading groups, discussions, film screening, skill shares, DIY, outings, and whatever else the visionary muse takes us.
We all have knowledge and skills to share with one another.
If you are willing to learn, teach or help organize free skool, thene we'd like you to be part of it. we are all students and we are all teachers. If you have a class idea or would like to get involved in any way we would love to hear from you.

free skool santa cruz is a great site for info. santacruz.freeskool.org/news.php

Vote for Scott Miller for City Council District 1

If I lived in Fresno City's Council District 1, I would be voting for Scott Miller. I've known Scott for a long time I went to Powers, Computech and Edison High School with him, and shared a few classes, when we started driving we car pooled to school. He a Good Man, Married to his High School Sweetheart, they started a successful family Gardening / Nursery business going on their own when he was 25, that's still going strong today, He's a friendly guy, who will listen to anyone who will talk to him. Trust me you want him as your Council Member. He's been involved with the Tower District all his life, He knows Fresno as well as I do and even more. Vote for Scott Miller, for me. Thank You.

If you know me I usually would not do something like this, but I'm doing this for Scott Miller who has been a friend for a long time.

The first official meeting for the starting of planning a regional took place tonight. In attendence were 5 of us. At last it begins. Since we are at the heart of California we came up with a name for our Regional - Fuego del Corazon (Heart of Fire).

I have also sent the first communication this evenning to The Burning Man oraganization letting them know of or starting plans and what from thier end we need to do next. We also have one of the team checking into an area for the Regional.

Sometime soon we would like to have an informal Pot Luck for any others that want to help out and or just get together. More information on that coming soon. This is a perfect opportunity for any interested in Burning Man or even the art community to come out.

Look forward to hearing from more of you and to a great Regional Organization.

for the shoppers

Ok, so it looks like Fresno is finally catching up with the bigger cities shopwise.

for those who don't know, Fashion Fair has been undergoing a major facelift over the last several years, just recently adding on an extra outdoor extension including some big names like Sephora, the Cheesecake Factory, Anthropologie, and Z Gallerie [the latter two not open yet]. i've also heard they'll be putting in an Urban Outfitters.

Fig Garden has been undergoing expansion, too, with Banana Republic, Pottery Barn, J. Jill, and Coldwater Creek [which i think is now open] joining the center.

Disillusioned with Fresno a bit

I have a question to pose or rather a statment. I have lived in Fresno since 1975. Came as a teenager. I have watched Fresno grow by leaps and bounds Physically. But mentally it still seems way behind. Why?

I have met so many people with good ideas, I have seen events that could have been great. I have seen the tribes on here. But they all seem to sputter away or just are not that active. It seems people in Fresno keep there creativness inside and that we live behind a fear to bring it out or something. It seems to me sometimes that Fresno is asleep. What will wake it up? And if there are so many that think outside the box and just pop up once and awhile why can't they all get together.?

Just a little disillusioned because I know Fresno could be greater then just growing phiscally all the time.

I am new to this Tribe, and I am glad to see a Tribe from Fresno.
I am from the SF Bay Area originally, and have returned to the Bay (I know, boo hiss).
I worked in Modesto for 2 years before being promoted to Fresno.
I lived in Fresno for 5 1/2 years until recently.
I enjoyed my years in Fresno. Made plenty of friends that I know will be friends for life.
Compared to Modesto, Fresno is Civilazation.
I know Fresno has a bad rap. The only people that I was able to change of this opinion, were the people that came to visit me in Fresno.
They too grew to like Fresno. They liked how friendly people are in Fresno. The quality of living $$$ compared to the Bay Area.
Is Fresno really the ArmPit of California???
Do people still think that Sal's is a good Mexican resturant?
Does the Meat Market still sell Lulu Kahbob?
All considered, I still miss Fresno.

Baltimore West

You may or may not all be interested to know that my brother, sister-in-law (Moonhilda) and I have deemed Baltimore Fresno's sister city. They both share similar oddities & quirky blue-collarness. Anything passes for a "festival," many locals have never moved out of the neighborhood they were born in, if someone asks you where you went to school they probably mean high school (despite the fact that there are a dozen or so universities in town, including Johns Hopkins), people have conversations in the middle of the street in the dark & seem surprised when you almost run them over... the list goes on & on! I'll take Fresno's Mexican food any day. People on the East Coast have no idea what real Mexican food is. This Californian is having withdrawals! Baltimore is a lot more cosmopolitan though, so maybe it's like Fresno's slightly retarded big sister.

You have to explain to friends from out of town what animal a "Tri-tip" comes from.

You think salsa goes on everything.

Drivers think a red light is just a suggestion.

Your out-of-town friends start to visit after October, but clear out before the end of April.

The best restaurants in town start with "El" or "Los."

You think $400 a month rent is way too high.

You know a swamp cooler is not a happy hour drink.

People break out coats when the temperature drops below 70. The pool can be warmer than you are.

You realize that Valley Fever isn't a disco dance.

You still don't know your way around downtown.

Anywhere "and 99" is too far away.

You think you're better than people from Clovis.

Someone mentions the Fair and your thoughts immediately turn to Cinnamon Rolls.

You drive just as fast on a sunny day in June as a foggy day in December.

You have to explain to someone about "G Street."

The whole town shuts down at 11:00.

You complain about how boring Fresno is, but still make fun of people from Sanger, Selma, Reedley, etc.

You hadn't been to Manchester Center in 10 years until the movie theater opened.

You never knew how you managed before River Park.

Someone from out-of-town talks about how foggy it is and tell them, "Just wait."
You know not to take Shaw at 8, 12, or 5.

You swear there was an orchard there last week, where now there are houses.
"I was a little surprised it was more of a national and international issue," said Ken Shockley, a city spokesman. "We haven't gotten a lot of local anger or feedback. The negative e-mails have been out of state and out of the country."

Jeez. Either Shockley's a liar, or it's impossible to get a rise out of Fresno folks. As a former resident, I'm ashamed for y'all.

Can you recommend the best places to sell used books?
And get some money for them?

I have a variety of stuff from Shakespeare plays to textbooks to some rare art books -- Lori Anderson's Nerve Bible, and Hunter S Thompson's Curse of Lono . . .

Hoping to get some real value . . . or I can go from place to place and "shop" for a buyer.

Thanks!!

Hey, can anyone recommend some good places to smoke hookah in the Fresno, Clovis, and Madera areas? Preferably a place with a good 'scene' in the evenings? Bellydance too, maybe?

I am also seeking the elusive perfect cup of Turkish, Armenian, or Egyptian styled coffee . . .

Thanks in advance for your recommendations!

It's that time of the year again...Princeton Ave. is having its sale this Saturday, May 14, starting at 7 a.m. Harvard's is next Saturday and is pretty big, but i've heard that Terrace's is bigger [not sure what date that is, but i'm guessing the Saturday after next]. The block sales are located mainly between Palm and Van Ness avenues.

With the recent housing boom and influx of people from Northern and Southern California, Fresno is starting to court more stores and businesses that people from the bigger cities are used to [it's about time!].

Fashion Fair has put in more trendy, youth-oriented retailers like Forever 21 and Abercrombie. What other retailers would you like to see?

Hola Fresno Collective,

I can't count the amount of time that I have spent looking for a local portal of like minded individuals from Fresno. Anyways, hello and be gentle, this is my first time :-)

I am a local trance dj, and have put together a number of demo cd's. I recently finished my new cd 'Breathless' and am curious if anyone is interested in a copy. It is a journey into my emotions, best heard at high volume :-)

It's free, and I have no problem sending you a copy snail mail...just email me your details...and away it goes. Feedback and comments are greatly appreciated.

If you can point in the direction of any local party promoters...that would be helpful. And since we are on the subject...what type of music do you listen too and who are your favorite djs?

Hi All~
I moved to Fresno in November from Paso Robles. I think one of the things that freaks me out about Fresno is that when I say I just moved here, people alarmingly ask "WHY?!?!?!" It makes me really second guess my decision.

Question: Are there any good, mellow bars in town to relax and have a drink? Jazz, blues music preferred.

Thanks!

I saw an amazing musical display last night in Madera. A 21-year old blues musician named Cole Fonseca. He's got a hundred year-old voice and is an amazing guitarist with a really good band. True knowledge of the blues, which is rare for a white guy.

He will be playing, I think on the 28th at Club Fred. Check him out.

Hey there

I'm most likely going to be moving to Fresno from the Bay Area in the fall. I've never even been to Fresno before, so tell me about it! What areas of town are safer than others?
Is the climate as dry, hot and dusty as I imagine?
As a lesbian, would I feel unwelcome or even threatened there?

I'll be road tripping to Fresno in a couple weeks, so any information you'd like to share, would be more than welcome.

Thanks!

Tea in the Tower

Good news for tea lovers [that's probably just me in this tribe] from the Bee:

A former futon store in the Tower District is being renovated into a specialty shop that will sell teas from around the world.

In about a month, Teazers World Tea market is expected to open on Olive Avenue. The store is the brainchild of business partners Ann McAtee and Ferry Santoso, avid tea drinkers who wanted to create a relaxing space where they could serve a variety of teas.

McAtee plans to serve traditional green and black teas, as well as flavored teas with aromas of peach, ginger, melon and citrus. Customers can buy hot tea by the cup, refrigerated bottled teas, teaware, desserts and tea to steep at home.

The store's interior is bathed in soothing colors of honey, lavender and green apple. An old Chinese house door hangs on a wall and the ceiling is covered in thin bamboo.

"I wanted to create a place where people could enjoy their tea in a relaxing and happy place," McAtee said. "I think Fresno is ready for something like this."

Wow, is it me or does anyone else find it strange that Fresno would have a naturalization ceremony at a shopping mall?

They had one yesterday at Fashion Fair. Last time I checked those kind of things took place at the federal courthouse.

From this morning's Fresno Bee:

Come the golden days of late September, when the usual water-slide crowd is yanked backed to school, Wild Water Adventure Park near Clovis may be busy with 15,000 revelers wearing nothing but sunscreen.

Billed as "possibly the largest nudist event in U.S. History!" by naturistevents.com, the event, according to organizer Cory Mangold, is the first of its kind at a water park.

Fresno's biggest yard sales event is happening this Saturday. It's pretty cool. We went last year and it's basically one giant neighborhood block party with music, food and bargains. It's located on Harvard Ave., mostly between Palm and Van Ness Aves., though there might be spillage to the next few streets over on each side.

As for the shirt, there are two designs: one in black and white via this guy's CafePress shop, the other sold through Hollister [Abercrombie & Fitch] that's in the album. Hah, it'd be funny to have one of those shirts. Too bad they're ugly.

Residents in the Central Valley's 19-county region generally like the communities where they live and believe the area will be an even better place to live in the future.

But those favorable impressions haven't eased their growing concerns about air pollution, the economy and the lack of jobs and affordable housing.

All right, I stole this idea from the Sacramento tribe [a city a lot like us but BIGGER and with RIVERS! oh yeah, and a real downtown and the KINGS...]

So. Where do you go or would you take someone for a "Fresno" experience?

Hi everyone, I just joined and am interested in networking with other Fresno area folks . . . a while back I started

Fresno Alternative
http://fresnoalternative.tribe.net/

We have about 20 members currently so check it out. Feel free to post anything you like. My general focus is finding out if Fresno can be a safe and fun place for a freak like me. I also want to find community with other interesting people in the area.

I am especially interested in building community for GLBT-friendly, pagan-friendly, vegan-friendly, polyamory-friendly, and or kink-friendly folks in the region. Also interested in tribal music, fire arts, dance (especially belly dance). Information on not-necessarily-Christian spiritual practices would also be great . . . are there Buddhists, Hindus, Jews, Jains, Hare Krishnas, Bahais, and other faiths represented in Fresno?

My profile says a lot about me . . . have a look at the tribe and join the adventure.

The Fresno Factor

What is it about Fresno that makes it hard for it to rise up to its potential? Afterall, it has its ambitions [downtown revitalization, i.e. Grizzly Stadium; the San Joaquin River Parkway as opposed to River Park the shopping center].

Is it the economic base? Local politics? What's your take?
